Texas vs. Oklahoma State: Third down defense, inability to stop run hurt Cowboys

It took until the last second for the Texas Longhorns to finally pull out a victory over Oklahoma State on Saturday, when Joe Bergeron rumbled through to the goal line for a late touchdown that gave them a late 41-36 lead.

Texas blog Burnt Orange Nation was impressed by the running game that the Longhorns were able to put together, forcing the Cowboys to keep the box loaded on defense all night long:

The media is waving the flag over the fact that Texas only gained 3.9 yards per rush. The fact that Texas kept pounding the ball and running inside zone and power O like a metronome had two results. Oklahoma State kept 8 players in the box nearly the whole night, and Ash could find open safety valve receivers or single coverage down the field whenever he wanted.

Oklahoma State blog Cowboys Ride For Free was frustrated at the inability of the Cowboys to make plays on third down defensively, which gave Texas plenty of free offense all evening long:

The defense couldn’t get off the field on 3rd down, playing fantastic on the first two downs almost all night. But when it counted, they gave up 3rd down conversions.

Not as much was brought up about the possible fumble at the goal-line which finished the game off, perhaps because the Cowboys had plenty of chances to turn the game their way before the eventual game-winning play happened.
