Maryland vs. Virginia 2012 final score: Terrapins use fast start to defeat Cavaliers, 27-20

Maryland started fast against Virginia, taking a 17-3 lead into the locker room. The Cavaliers came to life in the third quarter, but the Terrapins held on to get a key ACC road win.

The Maryland Terrapins held on to defeat the Virginia Cavaliers, 27-20, at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. Freshman quarterback Perry Hills threw for 231 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for another score, for the Terrapins in the win.

Maryland jumped on Virginia quickly, taking a 17-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the game on the strength of a kickoff return for a touchdown by Stefon Diggs, and a 20-yard scoring pass from Hills to Justus Pickett. Virginia answered with a field goal in the second quarter, and kept Maryland off the board long enough to add another 10 points in the third.

With their lead cut to 17-14, the Terrapins came up big with a rushing touchdown from Hills to start the fourth quarter. Virginia got a late score, as backup quarterback Michael Rocco connected with Jake McGee for 24-yard score. However, the Cavaliers were unable convert on fourth down in their final drive, allowing the Terrapins to escape with a win.

Box Score Hero: Diggs caught four passes for 89 yards, and had the 100-yard kickoff return to start the game. Virginia running back Kevin Parks had a strong day as well, rushing 17 times for 129 yards.

But Did They Cover? The Cavaliers were two-point favorites at home, so those who put their money on the Terrapins will get a nice payout. Virginia’s late touchdown sent the total score past the over/under of 44.
