West Virginia vs. Texas Tech final score: Mountaineers’ defense disappears in 49-14 loss

The West Virginia Mountaineers were fed their first loss of the season Saturday afternoon as Texas Tech annihilated the Mountaineers 49-14.

Texas Tech played a little role reversal with the Mountaineers Saturday afternoon, exploding for 676 total yards in its 49-14 upset over No. 5 West Virginia.

The rout was on from the opening kickoff, with the Red Raiders easily moving the ball 75 yards in less than two minutes. Seth Doege capped the series with a 39-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jace Amaro. Doege added another touchdown on TTU's next possession before West Virginia could finally respond. But Geno Smith's 7-yard connection to Stedman Bailey would be the Mountaineers' only score of the game until a garbage-time rushing touchdown by Dustin Garrison late in the fourth.

In between, Texas Tech scored 35 unanswered with four of the touchdowns being from the arm of Doege. And with West Virginia’s fatally-flawed defense showing its true colors, the offense was forced to overcompensate, trying to score on every play instead of just moving the chains.

The Heisman-favorite Smith threw 26 incomplete passes after only having 41 combined in West Virginia’s first five games. The Mountaineers also struggled in extending their drives Saturday, going 9-for-21 on third down and 2-for-7 on fourth, which will leave a lot of folks questioning the validity of WVU’s offense.

Box Score Hero: Texas Tech QB Seth Doege did his best Geno Smith impression, throwing for 499 yards and six touchdowns against just one interceptions.

Rankings Ramifications: The Mountaineers will surely fall out of the top-10 after this public embarrassment and could end up somewhere in the middle of the teens. Don’t be surprised if the Red Raiders jump into the top 25 picture as well after receiving votes in both the AP and USA Today polls last week.

But Did They Cover? As you might have guessed, West Virginia didn’t exactly do their part as three-point favorites.

Next Week’s Schedule: It won’t be getting any easier for West Virginia next week as it heads back home to take on No. 6 Kansas State. As for Texas Tech, it will be looking to carry this momentum on its two-game road trip that starts with a visit to TCU next Saturday.
