The Cardinal, who stated their intent to contend for the conference title with a Week 3 win over USC, are one game behind Oregon and Oregon State in the North Division with five conference games to play. Stanford followed a controversial overtime loss to Notre Dame with a 21-3 beating of rival Cal Golden Bears last week. The Cardinal offense has been spurred by halfback Stepfan Taylor, who has run for 846 yards and six touchdowns, including 189 yards and a score last week.
Washington State has struggled in its first year under head coach Mike Leach. The Cougars, 2-5 on the season to date, have lost four games in a row and are winless in the Pac-12. Leach has criticized his seniors as "empty corpses," banned Twitter and rotated quarterbacks between senior Jeff Tuel and sophomore Connor Halliday. Tuel took the majority of snaps in Washington State's loss to Cal two weeks ago. The Cougars enter the game off a much-needed bye week.
