Michael Bennett injury: Georgia WR out for season with torn ACL

The injury to Michael Bennett comes just days before Georgia’s showdown with South Carolina.

The Georgia Bulldogs got some devastating news on Wednesday, as wide receiver Michael Bennett has been declared out for the season with a torn ACL.

The injury occurred Tuesday in practice, just days before the team’s showdown with South Carolina. The matchup will be significant in the rankings and also for SEC positioning given that both teams are ranked in the top six programs nationally.

Bennett, a redshirt sophomore, is the team’s leading receiver with 24 catches for 345 yards and four touchdowns. He burst onto the scene after finishing 2011 with just 320 receiving yards.

The injury puts extra pressure on Malcolm Mitchell. After starting the season as a defender, Mitchell is returning to offense, where he will now likely assume a large role. As a freshman last season, Mitchell had 665 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

The Bulldogs play the South Carolina Gamecocks at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
