Kansas vs. Kansas State 2012 final score: No. 7 Wildcats rout Jayhawks, 56-16

The No. 7 Kansas State Wildcats pulled away from Kansas by forcing four turnovers and putting up 28 points in the third quarter.

The No. 7 Kansas State Wildcats routed the Kansas Jayhawks, 56-16, on Saturday afternoon at Bill Snyder Stadium in Manhattan, Kan. The Wildcats held just a seven-point lead at the break before pulling away in the second half.

Behind two touchdown runs from running back John Hubert, the Wildcats outscored the Jayhawks 28-2 in the third quarter to turn a 21-14 lead into a 49-16 laugher. The Wildcats would add another score early in the fourth, which came off a Dayne Crist interception late in the third. Kansas kept up with Kansas State in total yardage throughout the game, but five turnovers – including four in that pivotal third quarter – doomed the Jayhawks.

Hubert and quarterback Collin Klein combined for eight touchdowns for Kansas State. Kansas running back James Sims gained 115 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Crist completed 16-of-27 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown. He threw three interceptions.

Box Score Hero: Klein only threw 14 passes, completing seven of them for 129 yards. However, two of those went for touchdowns. Klein did plenty of damage with his feet as well, rushing for 116 yards and a two scores.

Hubert deserves a serious look here, too. He carried the ball just 10 times, but eclipsed the century mark in rushing yards while also scoring four touchdowns.

Rankings Ramifications: Kansas State should be in line for a bump up, as the Wildcats will likely move ahead of the loser of No. 5 Georgia and No. 6 South Carolina.

But Did They Cover? Kansas State entered the game as 25-point favorites, and while that looked to be in jeopardy for a good portion of the game, the Wildcats wound up blowing that figure out of the water. Kansas State nearly eclipsed the over/under of 57 on their own.
