Al Groh fired as Georgia Tech defensive coordinator after 2-4 start

Georgia Tech has announced defensive coordinator Al Groh has been relieved of his duties.

Georgia Tech has fired defensive coordinator Al Groh after his two and a half rocky seasons in Atlanta. The Jackets currently rank No. 92 in total defense, with lowly regarded Middle Tennessee among their four losses on the year, and finished No. 43 and No. 64 the previous two years.

In their last three games, the Yellow Jackets have given up 42, 49 and 47 points, continuing a spate of bad performances reaching back to last year. On Sunday after the latest loss, by 16 points to Clemson, coach Paul Johnson lamented that his offense has to score so many points every week.

Via the school, Groh commented on his departure:

The Institute has decided to go in a different direction, which I respect. I appreciate all the help and input from (assistant defensive coaches) Charles Kelly, Joe Speed and Andy McCollum, and the effort of all the players. I aimed to give the best that I had every day. It’s been an honor to be a part of the legacy of Georgia Tech football. I feel positive that this is a good time in life to move on to a new situation.

Groh was previously the head coach at Virginia, where he went 59-54. He has a 85-92 career head coaching record, having also helmed Wake Forest. He made his name as the defensive coordinator of the 1991 Super Bowl-winning New York Giants under Bill Parcells.
