Stanford vs. Notre Dame: Ty Montgomery doubtful for Saturday

Stanford Cardinal receiver Ty Montgomery is doubtful for Saturday’s game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish because of a knee injury.

Stanford Cardinal receiver Ty Montgomery is doubtful for Saturday's game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, head coach David Shaw told the Mercury News' Jon Wilner.

Though two tight ends lead Stanford in receiving, Montgomery, who is struggling with a knee injury, is not only the most prolific wide receiver for the Cardinal but the lead kickoff return man. He has 18 receptions for 168 yards and 10 kickoff returns for 258 yards in 2012.

Montgomery has had trouble hanging onto the football. Against Arizona last week, he caught a 16-yard pass before fumbling as Stanford was driving early in the fourth quarter and trailing 41-34. The Wildcats would recover to go ahead 14 points before the Cardinal came back and won in overtime.

Stanford football reporter David Lombardi said it's likely that Jamal-Rashad Patterson starts in place of Montgomery.

Patterson, a senior, has four catches for 100 yards this year. He had two catches against Arizona last week for 71 yards.
