Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a broken hip, which will force him to coach the Vols' Week 7 game against Mississippi State from the press box. According to a release from Tennessee, Dooley had been experiencing increasing pain in his right hip for the past two months. The fracture was discovered after an MRI on Friday, and the surgery on Tuesday was successfully performed at the UT Medical Center.

Dooley and the Vols are slight underdogs as they hit the road to face an undefeated and ranked Mississippi State team. The game will be a late 9 p.m. ET start in Starkville, and Dooley will be up in the coaches booth. Tennessee indicated that he’s expected to recover and be back to normal coaching duties by next week, but that’s still pending final clearance from the UT medical staff.

Tennessee is 0-2 in the SEC, and they're starting a brutal three-week stretch against three currently-undefeated conference foes. After Mississippi State, they will host Alabama before hitting the road to close out the month at South Carolina.
