Denard Robinson injury: Michigan to start Devin Gardner at QB

Former wide receiver Devin Gardner will make his second start of the 2012 season in place of Denard Robinson, who is dressed and warming up, but won’t start.

Michigan's Denard Robinson is warming up in advance of the Wolverines' game against Northwestern, but it appears Devin Gardner will get the start Saturday in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The team tweeted the news 90 minutes before the game.

Michigan coach Brady Hoke has been coy all week over who would start under center: Gardner, who performed well in the Wolverines’ 35-13 win at Minnesota Nov. 3, or the injured Denard Robinson.

Gardner was 12-for-18 for 234 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the victory.

Hoke’s decision to go with Gardner but keep Robinson active shows his willingness to give Gardner a chance to keep Robinson resting for another week. They’ll use him if necessary, but Gardner will get the nod against the Wildcats.

Gardner was originally a quarterback at Michigan, but requested a switch to wide receiver this season. His ability to keep Michigan’s offense from falling apart without Robinson could be the element that saves the Wolverines (6-3, 4-1 Big 10) season.

Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on Saturday.
