BYU accepts 2012 bowl bid to Poinsettia, likely vs. MWC team

Brigham Young will play in the Poinsettia Bowl on Dec. 20.

Jonathan Daniel

The Brigham Young Cougars have accepted an invitation to the Poinsettia bowl in San Diego, Calif., according to the school’s release. The Cougars became the second team to accept a bid after Navy agreed to participate in the Kraft Fight Hunger bowl on Dec. 29.

Both Jason Kirk of SB Nation and Jerry Palm of CBSSports.com are projecting BYU will play San Diego State in the bowl game.

The Cougars have won two games in a row to improve to 6-4 on the season and have suffered several close losses this season. BYU fell to then-No. 5 Notre Dame, 17-14, on Oct 20 and to then-No. 24 Boise State, 7-6, on Sept. 20. They will finish the regular season versus San Jose State and New Mexico State.

BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe:

We are excited to receive the formal invitation to play in the 2012 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. BYU has a storied bowl history in San Diego, dating back to the first Holiday Bowl in 1978, and we are looking forward to returning to Qualcomm Stadium. We have a large fan base in Southern California, and San Diego is a great destination for a holiday season bowl game.
