Texas A&M takes legal action against ‘Johnny Football’ merchandise

The Texas A&M Aggies and the Manziel family will do their best to try and trademark the phrase ‘Johnny Football.’

Mike Zarrilli

If you're a big enough fan of Heisman Trophy candidate and Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel that you'd like to own a "Johnny Football" shirt, it might be a good idea to wait a little while for the official version. Texas A&M and the Manziel family are working to try and trademark the nickname, reports Darren Rovell of ESPN.

There have been a few people and/or organizations that have tried to use the term Johnny Football for their own purposes, including an organization called Kenneth R. Reynolds Family Investments. Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports reports that the list includes several T-shirt makers and an action figure company. Texas A&M has stepped up in trying to protect the term, sending eight cease and desist letters.

Manziel is quite popular after his performance in Tuscaloosa, leading Texas A&M to a shocking upset of top-ranked Alabama. You have to figure that Johnny Football is going to stick around, so it makes sense that his family would try and protect the term as quickly as possible.
