USC drum major responds to UCLA sword ban: ‘Tradition is being abolished’

USC’s drum major stabs the center of each field the Trojans play on during pregame. It’s a tradition they’ve been doing for decades. But UCLA won’t let them do it this week in the Rose Bowl. Rivalries! Related: Bill Connelly previews USC-UCLA.

USC and UCLA have a very particular way of conducting business with each other. Around my part of the world (SEC country), if our school's mascot was a bear, we'd just retaliate by sending a bear over to poop on their turf, but regional variety is what makes this country great.

Here’s the latest, followed by how we got to this point:

Last year, a Pac-12 commercial included a clip of USC’s pregame sword tradition -- on UCLA’s turf. It’s at the 0:54 mark here:

UCLA fans were furious. I never got what the big deal was, but the Pac-12 sympathized, and in the end Bruins Nation was largely responsible for it being removed.

Which, of course, led to this USC fan creation:

This year, UCLA fans decided that not only should the sword not pierce UCLA grass in a conference-sponsored montage, but it should not do so at all. Bruins Nation has been at this one all week, finding victory on Wednesday.

Now let’s all get back to the important work, like the debate as to which team’s coach is the bigger dick and mass-synchronized electrical cussing and putting teleprompters to sleep. Oh, and there’s a football game to be played that decides who gets a shot at the Rose Bowl.
