Southern Methodist needed a win over host Rice Saturday to become bowl-eligible. A victory also would have clinched the Mayor’s Cup in the 90th edition of the game - one that doesn’t look to be played in the foreseeable future.
SMU vs. Rice 2012 Results: Owls use five field goals to top Mustangs 36-14
Junior kicker Chris Boswell was 5-for-6 on field goals, including three from over 50 yards, as the Owls stifled SMU’s bowl-eligibility bid with a 36-14 win in Conference USA action Saturday.

Rice, and its kicker Chris Boswell, had other plans.
Boswell was 5-for-6 on field goals, including hitting from 56, 53, 51, 43 and 28 yards, as the Owls knocked off SMU 36-14 Saturday.
Junior quarterback Taylor McHargue accentuated the win with a 13-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. He was 24-for-36 for 297 yards and two touchdowns, bringing Rice just inside Boswell's range, and allowing their defense to squeeze the Mustangs out of the game. SMU scored one touchdown in each half in the loss.
SMU trailed 20-7 at halftime, and got 94 yards on 19 carries from senior RB Zach Line in the loss.
Rice (5-6, 3-4 Conference USA) can become bowl-eligible with a win Nov. 24 at UTEP. SMU (5-6, 4-3 Conference USA) looks to rebound from its first loss to Rice in five years when it takes on Tulsa Nov. 24.
