Clemson, Boise State among 25 teams still under BCS consideration

The BCS released the 25 teams that could still appear in one of the BCS games, including non-AQ squads Boise State and Kent State.

The BCS has identified the 25 schools still in consideration for the 10 spots in BCS bowl games, including the expected squads as well as surprises like Oklahoma State and Oregon State and teams from non-AQ conferences like Kent State and Boise State.

Here’s the list from the official BCS release, featuring 17 teams still capable of winning the automatic qualifying spot from their conferences, as well as five additional schools that have either been eliminated from contention for automatic berths, two from non-automatic qualifying conferences, and one independent team:

The champions from the six conferences which receive automatic spots in the BCS games have not been determined. The following is a list of teams still contending for their conferences' automatic berths:

  • ACC: Florida State, Georgia Tech
  • Big East: Louisville, Rutgers
  • Big Ten: Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin
  • Big 12: Kansas State, Oklahoma, Texas
  • Pac-12: Oregon, Stanford, UCLA
  • SEC: Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Texas A&M

In addition to those teams, the pool of teams remaining under consideration also includes (in alphabetical order): Boise State, Clemson, Florida, Kent State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Oregon State and South Carolina.

The list is almost the same as the BCS Top 25 released after Week 13, with two exceptions: Wisconsin and Georgia Tech are still able to receive their conference’s auto-bids despite being out of the rankings, and No. 24 Arizona and No. 25 Washington are not among the teams still in consideration.

Notable inclusions are No. 23 Kent State and No. 22 Boise State, who will earn auto-bids if they manage to finish in the top 12 of the final BCS standings, or if they’re in the top 16, but higher than the champion of an auto-bid conference, but they could also receive at-large berths. The lowest teams with no hope of an auto-bid still alive are No. 15 Oregon State and No. 21 Oklahoma State, both of which will need to climb in the rankings above No. 14 to stay under consideration.

The list was discussed in a conference call between FBS league commissioners, Notre Dame’s athletic director, and bowl representatives.
