NCAA approves Georgia Tech waiver for bowl eligibility with 6-7 record

Even if the Yellow Jackets lose Saturday, they’ll get a chance to go bowling.

If the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets lose to the Florida St. Seminoles in the ACC Championship game Saturday, the Jackets will be 6-7. But the NCAA has approved the team to be bowl-eligible if it loses, according to CBS Sports' Jeremy Fowler:

Teams are not eligible for bowls if their record is below .500, but the NCAA is making a special exception for the Yellow Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets didn’t seem poised for a bowl appearance when they started the season with a 2-4 record. But the team rallied and won four of its last six games to finish the regular season with a 6-6 record.

Georgia Tech features one of the most persistent ground games in college football. The Yellow Jackets have six players with at least 380 rushing yards, including two quarterbacks. Tevin Washington, who has 618 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground, and Vad Lee, who has 489 yards and nine touchdowns, have been splitting time at quarterback lately.

The ACC Championship game kicks off at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday.
