College football’s new major bowl game now has an official site, as the Champions Bowl will be at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, according to various reports.
Champions Bowl is the new Sugar Bowl, according to reports
New Orleans’ Mercedes-Benz Superdome will be the site of the new Champions Bowl, between the SEC and Big 12, beginning in 2014.
Per Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel, there will only be one game played at the Sugar Bowl site -- and it will still be called the Sugar Bowl. The Sugar Bowl will now be an SEC-Big 12 game, rather than the SEC-at large bowl game it currently is.
With the Big 12 now tied to the Sugar Bowl beginning in 2014, the conference has lost its automatic tie-in to the Fiesta Bowl. Per Mandel, the Fiesta Bowl is trying to become one of three access bowls.
ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, who broke the Sugar Bowl news, reported that each conference will receive an $80 million dollar payout -- the same as the Rose Bowl payout.
The game will be called the Sugar Bowl, as the Champions Bowl name was merely a placeholder.
