Oklahoma vs. TCU 2012 results: Sooners one step closer to BCS bid

The Oklahoma Sooners beat the TCU Horned Frogs and are now a prime candidate for a BCS at-large berth. They could snag an automatic bid tonight if Texas beats Kansas State.

Damien Williams was responsible for two touchdowns Saturday as his Oklahoma Sooners beat the TCU Horned Frogs, 24-17, and took one step closer to a Big 12 championship and BCS bowl bid.

For now, Oklahoma is a strong possibility to receive a BCS at-large bid, but things will be strange in Norman tonight as thousands of OU fans cheer on their Red River rivals, Texas, as it takes on Kansas State. A Longhorns win would give the Sooners an outright conference title and an automatic berth in a BCS bowl.

To get to this point though, the Sooners had to come up with a tough road win Saturday afternoon.

In a game where the two teams were never separated by more than two scores, Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones connected with Williams for a touchdown reception in the final minute of the first quarter to open the scoring.

Jones later had a pass intercepted and returned 43 yards, setting up a six-yard touchdown run from TCU’s Trevone Boykin to tie the game.

The Sooners took the lead back just before the half when Jones connected with Jalen Saunders from 24 yards out. Jones finished the game 22-40 for 244 yards passing. Williams rushed for 115 yards on 18 carries.

66 of those yards for Williams came to open the second half, and resulted in another Oklahoma touchdown making it 21-7. Not to be outdone, Boykin hit Brandon Carter with an 80-yard pass just moments later to bring the Horned Frogs closer.

The two teams then traded field goals to provide the final margin.

TCU finishes the regular season at 7-5, 4-5 in its first year in the Big 12. Oklahoma is now 10-2, 8-1 in the Big 12, and will be anxiously watching the Texas-Kansas State game tonight, which kicks off at 8 p.m. ET.

Box Score Hero: Jalen Saunders had himself a nice day with seven receptions for a game-high 108 yards and a touchdown. Williams’ 115 yards on 18 carries wasn’t so bad either.

Rankings Ramifications: While the traditional top 25 polls aren’t quite as relevant right now, Oklahoma will probably move up a bit from their current No. 11 ranking in the Coaches’ Poll and No. 12 ranking in the AP Poll. Their 11 spot in the BCS standings should rise as well.

But Did They Cover? The Sooners were favored by 6.5 points, so they barely covered.

Next Week's Schedule: Both teams are bowl eligible and will be playing in the postseason, though neither club knows when or where. Oklahoma, as mentioned, will find out tonight if it will receive an automatic BCS bowl bid or if it will have to sweat it out for an at-large berth.
