Appalachian State’s heartbreaking 38-37 loss in overtime to Illinois State highlighted the morning round of FCS playoff games on Saturday.
2012 FCS playoff results: 4 teams advance in early games
Illinois State blocked an extra point in overtime to advance in the FCS playoffs to highlight the first set of FCS second-round playoff games.


Tied 31-31, Illinois State started overtime with the ball and scored a touchdown to make it 38-31. Appalachian State quarterback Andrew Peacock connected with Jamal Jackson to set up the game for more dramatics, but Illinois State had enough. Illinois State blocked kicker Sam Martin's extra-point attempt and ran into the next round of the playoffs with a 38-37 victory. Illinois State will face the winner of second-seeded Eastern Washington and Wagner College.
Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke threw six touchdowns as fourth-seeded Old Dominion ran over and through Coastal Carolina, 63-35. Heinicke passed for 497 yards, and wide receiver Larry Pinkard added six receptions for 154 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Coastal Carolina trailed only 42-35 at the start of the fourth quarter before its offense went cold and Old Dominion rattled off 21 unanswered points to put the nail in the coffin. Jerick McKinnon of the Georgia Southern Eagles rushed for 316 yards and two touchdowns as the fifth-seeded Eagles defeated the Central Arkansas Bears, 24-16. SB Nation Atlanta has all the details of the Eagles who will face the high-octane Old Dominion offense in the next round of the playoffs.
Wofford College jumped out to an early lead on New Hampshire and never really looked back in a 23-7 win. Eric Breitenstein rushed for 247 yards and three touchdowns as the second-best rushing team in the FCS ended with 454 yards on the ground. Wofford will go on to play the winner between the top-seeded North Dakota State and South Dakota State in the quarterfinals.
