Jesse Williams injury: Alabama tackle hurts knee in SEC title game

Alabama’s massive nose tackle injured his right knee early in the third quarter against Georgia.

Starting Alabama Crimson Tide nose tackle Jesse Williams suffered a knee injury just after halftime of the SEC Championship. He was on the turf for quite a while after a pileup, surrounded by trainers before limping off the field and undergoing further examination. CBS' Tracy Wolfson reported Alabama's trying to treat him back onto the field, but the broadcast showed signs of tears in Williams' eyes.

SEC Championship score updates and discussion

The 320-pound Williams is one of Alabama's most critical players, setting the interior of Kirby Smart's 3-4 defense. He has 2.5 tackles for loss and 35 tackles on the year, but nose tackles aren't easy to judge by statistics. He's backed by Damion Square, a 286-pounder who slides over from defensive end, thereby robbing the Tide of a whole lot of heft across the board.

Georgia responded by sending big Todd Gurley right into the weakened Bama front and pounding their way to a touchdown. It's now about to be 14-7, Georgia.
