Kliff Kingsbury hired as Texas Tech head coach

The 33-year-old becomes the head coach of the Red Raiders in just his third full year of coaching.

Texas Tech University Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt announced via video on Wednesday that Texas A&M offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury would be the next head coach for the Red Raiders. The hiring was also formally announced by Texas Tech Athletics.

Kingsbury had been rumored to be the favorite to replace Tommy Tuberville, who departed Texas Tech to coach Cincinnati. The 33-year old was the starting quarterback for the Red Raiders from 1998 to 2002, setting 39 school records and 13 Big 12 records while amassing 12,429 passing yards and 95 touchdowns. Drafted in the sixth round by the New England Patriots in 2003, Kingsbury bounced around the NFL before playing for a brief time in NFL Europe and the CFL.

The young coach joined the University of Houston in 2008 and worked through the ranks to become the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2010 under coach Kevin Sumlin. Kingsbury helped lead Houston to a record-breaking offensive year for the Cougars in 2011, and followed Sumlin to Texas A&M for the 2012 season.

Under Kingbury, the Aggies employed one of the more lethal offenses in college football, and helped lead freshman Johnny Manziel to a Heisman-winning season.

Texas Tech will play Minnesota in the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Houston on Dec. 28.
