Gary Andersen called every Utah State player to inform them he was leaving

Gary Andersen is leaving Utah State to become the head coach at Wisconsin. He took the time to call every player individually to tell them of his departure.

College coaches leave for other jobs all the time. Most of the time players, administrators, and fans understand it’s just part of the business. Nevertheless, not all coaching exits are handled equally as well. There’s the standard team meeting where a coach tells his team, after reports of his departure have been circulated by the media. There’s also the clandestine departure without ever addressing the team except via text message method (also known as the “Todd Graham maneuver”).

Then, there’s former Utah State and now Wisconsin head coach Gary Andersen. Andersen’s team is home for the holidays and with the Aggies’ bowl game having already been played, there was no opportunity for a team meeting. So, Andersen informed his team of his departure individually.

Kudos are in order for Andersen valuing his former players enough to make sure they heard from him directly before he left for greener pastures.
