Northern Illinois names Rod Carey new head coach

Carey will take over as the new head coach and his first game will be NIU’s Orange Bowl appearance against Florida State.

After his team's second straight MAC title was sewn up on Friday night with a win over the Kent State Golden Flashes, Northern Illinois Huskies head coach Dave Doeren headed elsewhere. Specifically, he went east and accepted the head coaching job at North Carolina State.

The powers that be at Northern Illinois knew exactly who they wanted to replace Doeren. Just 24 hours after Doeren departed, the school is expected to announce the permanent hiring of current offensive line coach and run game coordinator Rod Carey as the head coach. Carey also took over as the offensive coordinator when Mike Dunbar left before the season because of an illness.

Carey's first coaching assignment won't be an easy one. After crashing the BCS party with their win in the MAC Championship, the Huskies have earned their first ever trip to a BCS bowl. They'll head to Miami to play in the Orange Bowl against the ACC Champion No. 13 Florida St. Seminoles.
