2012 Russell Athletic Bowl results: Hokies steal a 13-10 OT victory

The Hokies might have pulled off the least exciting comeback in the history of collegiate sports Friday.

The Virginia Tech Hokies scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and overtime to earn a 13-10 victory over Rutgers in an offensively-challenged Russell Athletic Bowl Friday evening.

The Scarlet Knights led 10-0 after the first fifteen minutes with linebacker Khaseem Greene providing Rutgers with their only touchdown of the day off a fumble recovery. Following that mini-outburst though, both teams were silent in the second and third quarters, combining for a third-down conversion rate of 8-for-40 throughout the game.

But the Hokies took advantage of Nick Borgese's missed kick from 47 yards to start the fourth quarter and marched down the field for three points of their own. Virginia Tech then carried that momentum to their next possession with an interception from cornerback Antone Exum that set up a 21-yard Logan Thomas to Corey Fuller connection to tie the game.

After a scoreless final 11 minutes of regulation, Cody Journell stroked a 22-yard field goal on he first possession of overtime to give the Hokies a 13-10 edge. Borgese missed again on Rutgers' opportunity to match, ending the game and providing some mercy for those poor fans who were forced to watch this dud of a bowl game.

Box Score Hero: Calling anybody from this game a “hero” would be a stretch so lets just give this award to Hokies punter A.J. Hughes who averaged 41.7 yards on his whopping 11 attempts.

But Did They Cover? The Hokies ranged from one-point favorites to one-point underdogs at least they did their part for those who believed in them.
