Kent State coach Darrell Hazell is Purdue’s top choice to replace Danny Hope as head coach now that Butch Jones has passed on the opportunity, according to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy. Former Purdue coach Hope was fired after a 22-27 record over four seasons with the Boilermakers, and they have been searching for a replacement for the last week.

Kent State’s Darrell Hazell is Purdue’s top choice to be the new head coach now that Butch Jones has passed on the offer.


Hazell was hired by Kent State in December of 2010 and led the Golden Flashes to an 11-2 record in his second season. He was named Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year on Nov. 28. Prior to coaching at Kent State, he was the wide receivers coach at Ohio State from 2004 through 2010. A decision is expected from Hazell by Wednesday.
Purdue finished their season 6-6 with a 3-5 record in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers will play the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Heart of Dallas Bowl on Jan. 1 in Dallas, Tex.
