Bret Bielema: Barry Alvarez to coach Wisconsin in Rose Bowl

After leaving the Wisconsin to coach at Arkansas, Bret Bielema said that former UW coach Barry Alvarez will coach the Badgers in their Rose Bowl game.

Soon after the Wall Street Journal reported that Wisconsin Badgers athletic director Barry Alvarez wouldn't rule himself out of coaching the team in the Rose Bowl, departed coach Bret Bielema confirmed to reporters than the former UW coach would be leading the Badgers in "their bowl game," according to Bucky's 5th Quarter.

Wisconsin played in the Rose Bowl the past two seasons, but lost to TCU in 2010 and Oregon in 2011. Their last win in “The Grandaddy of Them All” was in 2000. That team was coached by Alvarez, who with the Badgers is 3-0 in the game.

Bielema announced he was taking the Arkansas head coaching position, and on Tuesday, Alvarez, the former head coach who hired Bielema as his own replacement, said the news was a surprise.

Wisconsin did not allow Bielema to coach his Wisconsin team against the Stanford Cardinal in the Rose Bowl despite his interest in doing so. Alvarez said he would do everything in his power to make sure the Wisconsin players have a good experience in their final game of the season.

The Badgers are 3-5 all-time in the Rose Bowl.
