Johnny Manziel wins Davey O’Brien Award

The awards have started rolling in for the Heisman candidate from Texas A&M.

USA TODAY Sports

He's better known as Johnny Football and in this college football award season, Johnny Manziel is expected to pick up a lot of hardware. The redshirt freshman quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies is a candidate for college football's most prestigious award, but the Heisman won't be handed out until Saturday. Before that ceremony though, he was given the Davey O'Brien Award for being the nation's best college quarterback tonight. He also became the first freshman to pick up the award.

Manziel exploded onto the college football scene this season, racking up an SEC record 4,600 total yards and 43 touchdowns through the air and on the ground. He also notched an upset of then No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa by a 29-24 score.

After the award season concludes, Manziel will lead his team to Dallas to take on a former Big 12 opponent, the Oklahoma Sooners in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 4.
