2012 Heisman watch: Manti Te’o’s big night hurt Johnny Manziel’s chances?

Manti Te’o takes home a record haul at college football’s awards night. Could Johnny Manziel’s seemingly locked-up Heisman Trophy be in jeopardy of going elsewhere now?

When Saturday night comes and the Heisman Trophy is awarded for the 2012 season, many expect that Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Johnny Manziel will be at the receiving end of the presentation. At least, that's what it seemed like ever since the three finalists -- Kansas State Wildcats quarterback Collin Klein, Notre Dame Fighting Irish linebacker Manti Te'o and Manziel -- were announced on Monday. Are opinions shifting?

Te’o walked away from college football’s awards night with a record six honors, including the Maxwell Award, given annually to college football’s best player as voted on by the Maxwell Award voters. Could the Heisman, which awards the “most outstanding” college football player in the nation, also be headed to South Bend?

Well, as many have surmised from the announcement of the Heisman finalists, ballots were due days ago, meaning any groundswell of support for Te’o, or Klein for that matter, will be too little too late.

In Heisman polls conducted before ballots were due, Klein and Te’o sat well behind the freshman superstar Manziel, and not much about those predictions are likely to change because of the events, however record-breaking they were, of Thursday night.
