New Pac-12, Big 12 bowl to open a spot for small conferences

The Associated Press reports that the Pac-12 and Big 12 are involved in planning a new postseason game that would pit a top team from either conference against the best out of a smaller conference.

Under the revamped college football postseason, The Associated Press reports that a tentative plan is underway for a bowl game to feature a Pac-12 or Big 12 team who will face off against one champion from a smaller conference.

The opponent would come from either the Big East, Mountain West, Conference USA, Sun Belt or the Mid-American Conference. With a four-team playoff beginning in 2014, one spot for a small-conference team would be left open for the top-rated school from one of those five conferences.

Because of the Pac-12’s involvement with the Rose Bowl, that game’s potential to hold a national semifinal would dictate which team would play in the new bowl game. For example, the champion could end up in the new game if the Rose Bowl semifinal does not include a team from the Pac-12. Otherwise a replacement team would be chosen.

The conferences do not want to make the plan public, according to the AP.
