Northwestern-Indiana: Matchup of historic losers

Northwestern faces Indiana today in a battle to avoid the ultimate college football indignity. This year, Northwestern is undefeated, a fringe Top 25 team, and possible contender in the Big Ten. History, however, has not always been so kind. For years, Northwestern was college football's losingest major program. Recent success, however, has caused Northwestern to gain ground on the next closest team in the loss column: Indiana. From SB Nation's Northwestern site Sippin' On Purple:

As we all know, Northwestern has long been the losingest team in NCAA history. It's a fact we've all internalized at this point, along with the fact Northwestern has the most consecutive losses in FBS history. But Northwestern has had six wins or more each of the past five years while Indiana hasn't had a winning season in that time frame. So the Hoosiers have had a run of failure sufficient enough to catch up to the Wildcats, entering the season with 631 losses. NU is 4-0, Indiana has been 2-1, and thus, it's 632-632 in the overall losses battle.

Northwestern is one of the few teams this year that can already boast of having won three games against other BCS conference teams and is favored to win today. If the Wildcats do, they'll hand the mantle of being college football's losingest team off to Indiana. With the next two games on Northwestern's schedule against Penn State and Minnesota, they can pull away from Indiana a little bit as well.
