Ole Miss vs. Alabama final score: Crimson Tide prevail over Rebels, 33-14

No. 1 Alabama used an offensive outburst in the second quarter to overcome a slow start against a very tough Ole Miss football team.

John David Mercer-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide overcame a slow start and finished strong, beating Ole Miss 33-14 on Saturday night.

The Tide trailed 7-6 in the second quarter after Jeff Scottt capped a 75-yard drive by Ole Miss with a 1-yard touchdown run. Alabama would respond with 21 unanswered points headed into halftime, thanks to Christion Jones' 99-yard kickoff return and two A.J. McCarron touchdown passes.

The second half would be much tighter, with Ole Miss closing to within 27-14 before being shut down offensively for the remainder of the game. The Rebels would outscore the Tide 7-6 in the second half, yet it was far from enough for a comeback.

Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron was 22-of-30 for 180 yards and two touchdowns in what was a tight defensive game overall against a determined Rebels team. Eddie Lacy added 82 yards rushing on 19 carries, as Alabama outgained Ole Miss 305-196.

Box Score Hero: Alabama receiver Amari Cooper, a true freshman, had 84 yards receiving and two touchdowns on eight catches.

Rankings Ramifications: Alabama should hold on to the No. 1 overall spot, especially with No. 2 Oregon struggling with a slow start as well.

But Did They Cover?: Alabama failed to cover the 31-point spread.

Next Week’s Schedule: Alabama plays Missouri on Oct. 13, while Ole Miss plays Texas A&M on Oct. 6.
