Big East says San Diego State prefers it to Mountain West

San Diego State is reconsidering its decision to join the Big East, and it appears the school would prefer at this point to stay in the Mountain West.

San Diego State is reconsidering its decision to move from the Mountain West Conference to the Big East. According to Big East commissioner Mike Aresco, the Aztecs’ current preference would be to stay in the Big East.

“Every indication is they want to stay,” Aresco said. “Whether they will or not we still don’t know. We’re still talking.”

San Diego State will be a part of Big East meetings in Dallas on Friday, but Aresco said he doesn’t expect a commitment one way or the other from the school at that point. A decision could be drawn out over several weeks.

San Diego State was one of several schools to commit to the Big East in the last round of realignment, including Boise State. But the Broncos recently backed out of their decision to make the move after recent developments that further destabilized the league. The Big East’s basketball-only Catholic schools decided to part ways with the league, while Louisville became the latest football member to head for the ACC.

Boise State’s decision is one reason why the Aztecs are reconsidering a move. Additionally, SDSU can withdraw from the Big East without paying an exit fee if there is no other Big East member located west of the Rocky Mountains.
