Conference realignment rumors: Mountain West rumors denied by UTSA

Despite the rumors flying around, UTSA officials say they have not been in contact with the Mountain West about a potential move to that league.

The UT-San Antonio Roadrunners recently have been mentioned in conference realignment rumors suggesting that they might be discussing a move to the Mountain West. Roadrunners athletics director Lynn Hickey denied any contact between her school and the MWC.

“We have not had any conversations, and I have not had a call, nothing,” Hickey said.

UTSA only began competing in football in 2010. That year, the Roadrunners played as a Football Championship Subdivision before transitioning to the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Western Athletic Conference. Now they are set to begin competing in Conference USA in 2013. UTSA is 12-10 under head coach Larry Coker.

Some changes to the MWC -- or rather, the reversal of some changes -- have come in recent weeks. Boise State decided not to leave for the Big East given that league’s instability and questionable future as a viable football conference, and San Diego State has been reconsidering its departure from the MWC as well.
