David Gibbs is returning to Houston. But he’ll be coaching at the University of Houston instead of in the NFL. Bruce Feldman reported via his source that Gibbs will be the new defensive coordinator for the Cougars under head coach Tony Levine.
Gibbs has nearly two decades of experience coaching either defensive backs or coordinating defenses on both the college and NFL level. At the University of Minnesota from 1997 to 2000, Gibbs’s defenses made great strides, and the Gophers emerged as one of the top units in the country in his third season. Gibbs also spent a year as the defensive coordinator at Auburn in 2005.
Gibbs has coached defensive backs for numerous NFL teams like the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs. Gibbs’s last stint was in Houston as the secondary coach for the Texans for two seasons. He was released in 2011 and has not coached in a major football program the past two seasons.
