Virginia football 2013: Top defender Chris Brathwaite done

Virginia Cavaliers defensive tackle Chris Brathwaite is no longer a member of the football program.

Geoff Burke-US PRESSWIRE

The Virginia Cavaliers announced that defensive tackle Chris Brathwaite has been declared ineligible and is no longer a member of the football team. Brathwaite was a sophomore last year and was a key contributor on defense. Virginia head coach Mike London released this statement on Brathwaite.

“I am disappointed that Chris did not make the commitment he needed to succeed off of the football field,” London said. “If the time comes where he can return to UVa, and rejoin the team, he must do so with great enthusiasm for the things that we expect and require of our student-athletes.”

The door appears to be open for Brathwaite to return, but he will probably have to commit to a lot of work in the classroom to come back to Charlottesville.

Brathwaite was 8th on the team this year in tackles with 41, first on the team in tackles for loss with 10, and also led the team in sacks with 3.5. Brathwaite also forced a fumble.

If Brathwaite does not return, Virginia will still return most of their defensive line, with Jake Snyder and Eli Harold both returning at defensive end and Brent Urban coming back for his senior season as a defensive tackle. Will Justin Renfrow or David Dean step into that second spot for Virginia?
