Bill Lazor leaving Virginia OC job to join Eagles, according to report

Chip Kelly will be adding some NFL experience to his staff. Virginia will find itself starting up the college coaching carousel again.

Rich Schultz

Virginia offensive coordinator Bill Lazor will be joining Chip Kelly's staff in Philadelphia, according to Bruce Feldman at CBS Sports. Lazor has coached the offense at UVA for the past three seasons. As Feldman mentioned, he previously worked with as the quarterbacks coach for the Seahawks and Redskins, and as an assistant on Jim Mora's Falcons staff.

Kelly may be bringing Lazor in to help adapt his spread running offense to the professional game. Lazor ran a pro-style system at Virginia, with an slight emphasis on the pass.

Lazor led the Cavaliers offense to instant improvement in his first year as OC, but effectiveness tapered off over the next two seasons. The UVA offense was among the worst in the nation when he took over, but shot up to 59th in Football Outsiders’ S&P+, a statistic that measures explosiveness and sucessful plays, in 2010. The Cavaliers’ drive efficiency also improved, according to FEI, as they climbed to 71st in 2010 and 51st in 2011. However, the offense took a step back in 2012, finishing 90th in FEI and 97th in S&P+.

Virginia is now left searching for a new offensive coordinator as much of the offseason movement in college football has already occurred. Whoever takes the job will inherit a junior quarterback in Phillip Sims, who saw extensive playing time as a sophomore, and Kevin Parks, the team's leading rusher in 2012.
