Rutgers runs fake field goal as offensive lineman begs for the ball

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights dug into their bag of tricks early against Louisville on Thursday night, running a 26-yard fake field goal to set up a touchdown. Already down 17-0 in the second quarter against their conference rival and facing a fourth-and-3 at the Louisville 27-yard line, Rutgers set up for a 44-yard field goal attempt.

It was not meant to be: Rutgers shifted into a shotgun formation, and placekick-holder-turned quarterback J.T. Tartacoff took the snap and completed a pass to tight end Tyler Kroft to get the Scarlet Knights a first down on the Louisville goal line.

For those wondering, that was offensive lineman Keith Lumpkin waving like a madman in the backfield:

Suffice it to say, he was not the primary target on the route -- Lumpkin’s histrionics drew the Louisville linebackers his way, a clear sign of a decoy -- but the FAT GUY TOUCHDOWN potential in this play is off the charts.

Rutgers quarterback Gary Nova connected with Kroft for a touchdown on the next play, breaking the shutout and drawing the Scarlet Knights within 10 points as halftime approaches.
