Louisville Cardinals wide receiver Kai De La Cruz left Thursday night's game against Rutgers with an apparent leg injury. The junior wideout pulled up short on a downfield route in the third quarter, and was seen hobbling inside 10 yard line. He was helped to the locker room with the assistance of two trainers.
Louisville WR Kai De La Cruz leaves game with apparent leg injury
The Cardinals’ already-thin wide receiver depth chart just got thinner.
At the time of his injury, De La Cruz had three catches for 56 yards and a touchdown. Both his receptions and yardage totals are second on Louisville Thursday night, behind senior Damian Copeland. The Cardinals are already missing top wideout DeVante Parker, who leads the Cardinals in receptions, yards, and touchdowns, but did not dress for Thursday's game. De La Cruz was playing as Parker's replacement.
True freshman James Quick, who recorded his first career reception earlier Thursday, is expected to play in De La Cruz's absence. Quick is the highest-rated recruit to ever sign with Louisville, and his breakthrough has been hotly anticipated by Cardinals fans.
Louisville leads Rutgers 17-7 late in the third quarter.
