Rutgers recruiting 2013: Still the AAC’s best

No new commitments? No matter - the Scarlet Knights still rank in the top 25 for recruiting.

Jim McIsaac

Kyle Flood has to be ecstatic with how his 2014 class is shaping up -- the Scarlet Knights remain atop the AAC recruiting rankings and have held steady at 22nd in the country, according to the 247composite. Perhaps even more impressively, they hung onto this ranking despite no new commitments last month.

In fact, with already 25 verbals, Rutgers is fairly close to finished with this recruiting class as it is, and barring some surprises from Louisville, it should finish with the best class in the conference. It is unlikely to be caught by third-place South Florida, which is a distant third.

The highlights for this Rutgers class begins with a trio of in-state commitments -- wide receiver Saeed Blacknall, safety Kiy Hester, and wide receiver Adonis Jennings were all major victories for the Scarlet Knights. Each is a four-star recruit on the 247sports composite, and all three ranking among the top 40 at their positions, with Blacknall and Hester actually ranking within the top 20. Between Blacknall, Hester and Jennings, Rutgers has three four-star commitments, while the rest of the AAC has two in total.

Beyond those three, though, the Scarlet Knights have several other potential impact-makers, including 6’6, 365-pound offensive tackle Tariq Cole, who is among the top 35 tackles this year. Cole is a three-star on the 247composite. He’ll be blocking for a pair of three-star running backs, as well -- 6’0, 190-pound Josh Hicks and 5’10, 180-pound Robert Martin. Martin is classified on 247sports as an all-purpose back, and ranks 12th in the country among players with that designation.
