Oregon takes 7-0 lead on Washington with help of three replays

A bizarre sequence ends in a Ducks lead.

After a 10-play, 77-yard drive that featured three goal line replay decisions, Oregon running back Byron Marshall took a fourth-down handoff and barely got into the end zone to give the Ducks a 7-0 first quarter lead.

Oregon started the series at its own 23, but quickly moved deep into Washington territory. A 43-yard Marcus Mariota pass to Bralon Addison gave the Ducks first and goal at the Washington 9 yard line. That's when the insanity began. Thomas Tyner took a handoff to the 7 yard line. On the next play, Josh Huff carried the ball toward the goal line, then dove for the pylon. He lost the ball into the end zone for an apparent touchback, but the first review found that Huff was down prior to the fumble and gave Oregon 3rd and goal inside the 1 yard line.

On third down, Mariota tried an interior run. The officials initially called it a touchdown, but replay showed that Mariota was stopped a foot short of the end zone. Oregon now had 4th and goal, with a foot to go.

On fourth down, Marshall took the handoff and crashed into the line. Two Huskies defenders were waiting, and Marshall was clearly short with his initial burst. A subsequent push from lineman Hamani Stevens took Marshall near the line.

After untangling the bodies, the referees gave Oregon the touchdown. A subsequent replay found insufficient evidence to overturn the ruling on the field, to the disapproval of the hometown fans.
