No. 1 Alabama vs. Kentucky: Crimson Tide rolls over Wildcats, 48-7

Alabama started slow, but didn’t stay slow for long.

Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

The Alabama Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 SEC) rolled past the Kentucky Wildcats (1-5, 0-3 SEC) Saturday night, scoring three second-quarter touchdowns to blow the game open en route to a 48-7 victory. The Crimson Tide defense held the Wildcats to just 167 yards of total offense and pounded out a staggering 299 rushing yards on 44 attempts.

Neither team scored in the first quarter, but Alabama made sure the game didn't stay low-scoring for long. After a Cade Foster chip-shot field goal, the Crimson Tide scored four unanswered rushing touchdowns -- two by Kenyan Drake, two by T.J. Yeldon -- to take a 31-0 lead early in the third quarter. A 75-yard Kentucky scoring drive temporarily stopped the bleeding, but Foster added another short field goal late in the third quarter. A Kevin Norwood touchdown reception further extended the Alabama lead, and Altee Tenpenny ran for a sixth Alabama touchdown with less than two minutes to go.

Box Score Hero: Alabama running backs T.J. Yeldon and Kenyan Drake split the honors. Saban’s two-headed halfback monster combined for 230 yards and four touchdowns on 30 attempts. Drake also caught 3 passes for 44 yards, while Yeldon recorded one reception for nine yards.

Rankings Ramifications: Alabama should remain in the top spot in both major polls this week, though it could lose some first-place votes due to Oregon’s win over Washington. Kentucky is, and will remain, unranked.

But Did They Cover? The Crimson Tide were 27-point favorites over Kentucky, and covered with relative ease.
