College football news: Stanford, Georgia fall on a Saturday marked by major upsets

Two top-10 teams lost to sizable underdogs on another Saturday marred by major injuries.

Two top ten teams fall

Both the Georgia Bulldogs and the Stanford Cardinal suffered tough conference losses on Saturday. The Bulldogs' loss to the Missouri Tigers was not a completely unreasonable outcome, but very few anticipated the Cardinal would struggle with -- much less lose to -- Kyle Whittingham's Utah Utes. Clemson and Texas A&M also had near misses with Boston College and Ole Miss, respectively, but were able to pull out wins with big fourth quarters.

Injuries all over the place in Oxford

In a season where way too many of the game's best players have gotten injured, several more bodies fell to the turf during Texas A&M's 41-38 win in Oxford. Johnny Manziel tweaked the left knee that he sprained last year against Missouri. Robert Nkemdiche left with an apparent hamstring injury. Deshazor Everett exited the game with an undisclosed injury, and Serderius Bryant was carted off the field after sustaining an injury to the head/neck area.

B1G injuries

Two more major injuries played out outside of the SEC. Star Michigan left tackle and top NFL prospect Taylor Lewan left the team’s loss to Penn State with a leg injury. Wisconsin wide receiver Jared Abbrederis, one of the main offensive weapons for the Badgers, left the team’s blowout win over Northwestern with a head injury.

South Carolina AD Ray Tanner fires back at Finebaum

It was a tumultuous week for the Gamecocks and Jadeveon Clowney. After several days of speculation about his effort during games and whether or not he is committed to the team because of his inability to overcome a rib injury to play in last weekend's game against Kentucky, the future first-round draft pick played in and was effective during the Gamecocks' 52-7 dismantling of the Arkansas Razorbacks. Prior to the game itself, there was a great deal of confusion about whether or not Clowney had boarded the team bus (he had), and South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner fired back at Paul Finebaum, who described Clowney as the "biggest joke in college football."

ESPN’s College Gameday returning to Clemson

College Gameday will be set in Clemson, S.C. for the second time this season after previously being there for the Tigers' opening weekend victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. This week, Chris Fowler and company will be in town for what is being billed as the most important game in ACC history: a matchup between No. 6 Florida State and No. 3 Clemson, headlined by star quarterbacks Tajh Boyd and Jameis Winston. The winner will have the inside track to winning the ACC's Atlantic Division.
