Auburn starting QB returning for Texas A&M game

Nick Marshall couldn’t play against Western Carolina, but he’ll be ready for Texas A&M.

Shanna Lockwood-USA TODAY Sports

A knee injury prevented Nick Marshall from playing against Western Carolina on Saturday, but he’ll be back under center for Auburn’s game against Texas A&M. Marshall suffered the injury during a run in the fourth quarter of the Tigers’ victory over Ole Miss on Oct. 5.

Jeremy Johnson started in Marshall’s place against the Catamounts, burning his redshirt in the process, and he played well. Gus Malzahn immediately dispensed with any potential talk of a quarterback controversy after the game, stating emphatically that it’s still Marshall’s job.

The Tigers could afford to go without Marshall against Western Carolina, which is a low level FCS team. But Texas A&M is obviously a big one for Auburn, and an opportunity to validate a strong 5-1 start in Malzahn’s first season.

Marshall has 902 passing yards this season, with four touchdowns and four interceptions. He is also fourth on the team with 288 rushing yards, and he’s averaging better than five yards per carry.
