Connor Shaw injury: Gamecocks QB not likely to play against Missouri

South Carolina figures to be without its starting quarterback when it travels to Columbia for a crucial game against Missouri.

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

The injury suffered by Connor Shaw against Tennessee on Saturday might not be as serious as originally feared, but it appears likely the knee strain will prevent him from playing against Missouri next week. Shaw won't need surgery, but he won't be able to practice for at least two or three days, according to coach Steve Spurrier.

“I would say, yes, he’ll be able to come back. I’m sort of doubtful he’ll be ready to do much this week,” Spurrier said during his Sunday teleconference. “We’ll know more about his situation Wednesday or Thursday.”

Spurrier added that his ailing quarterback is in a knee brace and “walking around a little bit.” Shaw suffered the injury late in South Carolina’s loss to the Volunteers, and while it looked initially like a major knee injury, an MRI conducted Saturday night revealed no torn ligaments.

In Shaw's absence, the Gamecocks would turn to Dylan Thompson, who has appeared in six games this season. Thompson is 29-of-51 for 421 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions on the season.
