Week 9 of the college football season is upon us. There’s been no shortage of news lately, especially across the SEC and out west. Let’s dig into everything that made headlines on Friday.
College football news: Marqise Lee out against Utah; Mizzou down to two quarterbacks vs. South Carolina
Lee continues to deal with a knee sprain he suffered nearly a month ago while the Tigers will be placing their full trust in Maty Mauk on Saturday night.

Marqise Lee reportedly out vs. Utah
The Trojans will be without Lee once again as they take on Utah this Saturday. The electric wide receiver sprained his left knee against Arizona State on Sept. 28 and sat out the next game. When playing against Notre Dame last weekend, he appeared to re-injure himself and did not return after being checked out by the training staff.
USC is dealing with a ton of injuries right now and the loss of their No. 1 receiver will only make things against a quality Utah team that much more difficult.
Mizzou down to two freshmen QBs against South Carolina
The Tigers are already without James Franklin for at least the next few weeks. On Friday, it was announced third-stringer Corbin Berkstresser is out with a knee injury he suffered a few weeks ago in practice.
What does that mean for redshirt freshman Maty Mauk? If he gets injured, MU will have to turn to true freshman Eddie Printz. That would be a really difficult situation for Gary Pinkel and the coaching staff, and if something serious were to happen to Mauk, there’s a decent chance the Tigers would just run Wildcat formations. Printz was a three-star prospect coming out of high school and is yet to take a snap at the college level.
Casey Pachall to suit up for TCU-Texas game
It's been a rough year so far for the Horned Frogs; the team is 2-3 since starting quarterback Casey Pachall broke his arm in September, and backup Trevone Boykin has not played well.
According to head coach Gary Patterson, Pachall is cleared to play against Texas this weekend. That’s great news for TCU, especially with the Longhorns’ pass defense being so bad this season. It’s unclear just how much Pachall will play, but it should serve as a huge confidence booster regardless.
Alabama taking action against students
In an effort to stop students from leaving games early, Alabama is revoking seating privileges from a select group of student organizations -- primarily fraternities -- that left last week’s game at halftime. Many fans complained about the empty-looking student section last weekend with Arkansas in town, and Nick Saban was not pleased with the fans who decided to not support the team for four quarters.
