Iowa State has Texas on upset alert despite late Hail Mary

This was starting to feel like one of those Paul Rhoads games, and then Texas got a stroke of luck at the close of the first half.

A 44-yard last-second bomb from Case McCoy to John Harris gave the Texas Longhorns a 17-13 lead at the half against Iowa State. Texas took an early lead when running back Johnathan Gray broke a 45-yard touchdown run on the Longhorns' fourth play from scrimmage. A James White fumble recovered by Jackson Jeffcoat led to a Texas field goal, and the Longhorns held a 10-0 lead after one quarter.

Iowa State stormed back in the second quarter. A 37-yard Cole Netten field goal made it a one-possession game. An Aaron Wimberly catch-and-run tied the score with just over four minutes left before the half. The touchdown capped a 15-play, 92-yard drive in which the Cyclones converted five third downs. A third Iowa State scoring drive led to another field goal, giving Iowa State a brief lead.

The Longhorns took over at their own 25 with 33 seconds left before halftime. McCoy completed a pair of passes, but Texas faced a final play from the Iowa State 44. McCoy dropped back, stepped into the pocket, and chucked it deep. Harris outjumped an out-of-position Iowa State secondary to restore the Texas lead.

Iowa State quarterback Sam B. Richardson has been excellent so far, completing 10/14 passing for 118 yards and a score. Richardson has also run for 52 yards on 8 carries. Running back Aaron Wimberly has 61 rushing yards and an eleven-yard touchdown catch. Wide receivers E.J. Bibbs and Quenton Bundrage each have three receptions for the Cyclones.

Until the final drive, Texas quarterback Case McCoy struggled in place of injured starter David Ash. McCoy is now 11/19 for 128 yards. Johnathan Gray has 60 yards on 8 carries, but 45 of those yards came on the early touchdown run.
