College football news: Stanford loses star DE ahead of Oregon game, Golson admits cheating
Former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson admits to cheating, and the college football gridiron claims a few more healthy bodies.

Stanford defensive end Ben Gardner will miss the remainder of the 2013 season with a torn pectoral muscle, effectively ending the senior’s career with the Cardinal. Gardner suffered the injury during Saturday’s win against Oregon State, and was pictured on the sideline clearly in great pain and demonstrably upset. Gardner was one of Stanford’s best defensive players, and replacing him will be no easy task, especially with Oregon up next.
Golson admits cheating on test
Former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson told Sports Illustrated that cheating on a test was the reason he was kicked out of school just months after leading the Fighting Irish to the BCS National Championship Game. Golson intends to re-enroll at Notre Dame in January and return to the football team for the 2014 season. Current Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees is a senior, so the path would presumably be clear for Golson to return to his starting role.
Nick Marshall considered “day-to-day” with shoulder injury
Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall left the Tigers’ thrashing of FAU early in the second quarter after sustaining a shoulder injury. Gus Malzahn said on Tuesday that he is unsure of Marshall’s status for this Saturday’s game against Arkansas and that Marshall is considered “day-to-day.” Highly regarded true freshman Jeremy Johnson has stepped in for Marshall during the two games that the junior signal-caller has missed due to injury.
Worley tears thumb ligaments, will miss four weeks
The Tennessee Volunteers will be forced to thrust true freshman quarterback Joshua Dobbs into a difficult situation on Saturday. After starter Justin Worley went down with a torn hand ligament in last weekend's 45-10 loss to Alabama, Dobbs will be called upon to make his first career start on the road against the Missouri, the 10th-ranked team in the country. Dobbs was a four-star prospect out of high school and the 14th-ranked pro-style quarterback in the 2013 class according to the 247 Sports Composite recruiting index.
Mike Madaras leaves Terrapins
The Terrapins have had a rough go of it over the past several weeks, losing key starters to injury on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Maryland head coach Randy Edsall got some more difficult news on Tuesday when it was announced that the Terrapins’ starting left tackle left the football program and withdrew from the school entirely.
