The Spartans started out the year with three straight wins over easy competition, defeating Western Michigan and South Florida in games closer than they might have hoped before blowing out Youngstown State. After a close road loss to a now unranked Notre Dame team, Michigan State has had a bye week to prepare for what should be a tight contest on the road against Iowa.
The Hawkeyes have done two things very well this season -- run the ball and stop the other team from scoring -- and this will be a good opportunity for them to prove themselves on the national stage. Iowa dropped their home opener to Northern Illinois 30-27, but have since won four straight -- defeating Missouri State, Iowa State, Western Michigan and Minnesota.
The numbers
Rankings and records: Michigan State is 3-1, while Iowa is 4-1 with a 1-0 record in Big Ten play. Michigan State received votes in both polls, while Iowa received one vote in the Coaches’ Poll. The Hawkeyes hold a 23-19-2 lead in the all-time series, and have won three of the last four games between the two schools.

Three names to know
Mark Weisman. Iowa's running back is the very definition of a work-horse back -- he has 119 carries on the season already, and is averaging more than five yards per rush. With quarterback Jake Rudock struggling to find consistency, the Hawkeyes have been able to rely on Weisman for offensive output.
Damond Powell. The Iowa receiver has just four receptions this season, but they have gone for 49, 29, 54, and 74 yards, respectively.
Shilique Calhoun. Michigan State's defensive end is putting together a phenomenal sophomore season, as he leads the country with a remarkable three defensive touchdowns.
Two things at stake
After an inauspicious start to the season, Iowa opened up B1G play with a solid road win. A home win over Michigan State could set them up in good position for a third place finish in the Legends Division.
With three wins over very bad teams, Michigan State is looking to prove they are for real against a beatable Iowa squad.
