Sometimes, football blesses you with a moment so wild, so stupid, so incredible, that you have to break it down in great detail. Kansas State-Oklahoma State gave us one of those moments.
Kansas State tries to redefine football by passing on kick return
Everybody was confused in Stillwater as a defensive end that caught a kickoff had no clue what to do.
OSU’s quarterback J.W. Walsh ran for a touchdown with 50 seconds left in the half, so the Pokes decided to pooch their kickoff. This ended up with Laton Dowling, a defensive end, fielding the football. He quickly realized he did not want the football, since he’s a defensive end and isn’t good at running. Since he’s a defensive end, he also isn’t good at catching, he caught the ball while stumbling backwards. So he tried to get the ball to a nimbler player.
But since it was a kickoff, said nimbler player had already moved ahead of him on the field and started to think about blocking. Thus, Dowling did this:
Oklahoma State hopped on the ball. But since Dowling had passed the ball forward voluntarily, the ball hitting the ground ended the play as if it were an incomplete pass, rendering the fact that OSU recovered the loose fumble irrelevant.
The ref tried to explain all this, but his mic was off, so he just stood around gesturing for about 30-ish seconds while making hand motions
Mike Gundy wanted more explanation, because, what?!?!?!?! But it was useless: Kansas State was able to kneel the half out.
