Tony Dungy says USC contacted him (but USC denies it)

Update: USC says it was an impostor.

In their ongoing effort to replace Lane Kiffin, USC has reportedly contacted former NFL head coach Tony Dungy to see if he was interested in a return to coaching.

Perhaps most interesting is the way the Trojans got in touch with Dungy.

Dungy wasn’t even included in the Vegas odds on who could take over -- a list that included Herm Edwards.

Born in Michigan, Dungy has no obvious ties to the USC program. He went to the University of Minnesota and played briefly for the Steelers and 49ers before moving on to become a positions coach and coordinator with the Steelers, Chiefs and Vikings.

Dungy's first head coaching stint came with the Buccaneers in 1996, and turned the team from a cellar dweller into a perennial playoff contender. In 2002, he was hired by the Colts, where he made the playoffs all seven years and won Super Bowl XLI.
